Two Russian strategic bombers landed in Venezuela on Wednesday as part of military maneuvers, the government said, announcing an unprecendented deployment to the territory of a new ally at a time of increasingly tense relations with the U.S.

While the candidates are debating over lipstick and the ownership of the word “change”, the frosty relationship between the U.S. and Russia continues to get even cooler. I’d like to hear them put this issue on the table and talk specifics about how they plan to address it. Sure feels like its back to the future . Mutually assured destruction just doesn’t seem like a contemporary strategy to me…

Rally for murdered Russion writer

Amplifyd from news.bbc.co.uk
Relatives, friends and campaigners have been marking the first anniversary of the murder of Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
A fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin, she was shot dead in her Moscow apartment block on 7 October last year.
Hundreds rallied in Moscow on Sunday calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Elsewhere in the Russian capital several thousand members of the pro-Kremlin youth movement Nashi, held a separate demonstration to celebrate Mr Putin’s 55th birthday.
After her contract-style killing, there were demands for those responsible to be brought to justice as quickly as possible.
The outcry included allegations that Mr Putin was failing to protect freedom of speech.
In the year since Ms Politkovskaya’s death at least two more Russian journalists have died in suspicious circumstances and another was shot and injured, says the BBC’s Moscow correspondent Richard Galpin. See more at news.bbc.co.uk

Pakistan high court muddles election

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan can go ahead with its presidential election, but the winner can’t be declared ” at least not for a while, the country’s Supreme Court said Friday.

That brought new doubts about his future and his pledges to end eight years of military rule, restore democracy and redouble efforts to fight surging Islamic militancy. And it rekindled speculation that Musharraf might resort to martial law to hold on to the presidency.

“Pakistan will be in a state of political limbo for quite some time,” analyst Talat Masood said.
