Marketers turning up the volume on Twitter smack - question relevancy

Dave Grossman says:

This interesting article primarily focuses on the relevancy of Twitter and tries to draw a comparison to Second Life. I amplified this part because it struck me that the chatter questioning Twitter's sustainability taking place for some time is starting to surface directly from marketers. At the same time, they are becoming even more vocal about leveraging Facebo... read more

f you’re a marketer who has steered clear of Twitter, your (non)strategy may be paying off! It’s possible that this Twitter thing may just take care of itself.
“I’m not a big fan of Twitter,” says Joel Ewanick, group vp of marketing for Hyundai. “My Twitter meter has gone down.” Ewanick says he finds Facebook, which has copied most of Twitter’s best features, to be a superior platform. “[Twitter has] become the butt of a joke. You start seeing in popular culture people making fun of Twitter.” Geoff Cottrill, CMO for Converse, seconded that.

“Twitter is a little bit overrated,” he says. “There will be a new media toy that will replace it in a year or two.”Read more at www.brandweek.com

Super Bowl Sunday Consumption Statistics…Burp.

Dave Grossman says:

Super Bowl Sunday has literally become a get-out-of-jail-free card for most Americans with regard to food-consumption. Amazing. Now, if the NFL would just move the game to Saturday we might get the absentee statistics for Monday down and perhaps sell even more food, TVs and such which would help our economy.

Some 12 million pounds of avocado are sold in preparation for the game so that Americans may gorge themselves on an estimated eight million pounds of guacamole
7-Eleven claims a whopping 20 percent in sales of antacid the day after the Super Bowl
Statistics show that six percent of all working Americans will call in sick the day after the Bowl
Approximately $55 million will be spent on Super Bowl food this year

Jon Stewart visits Fox News

Dave Grossman says:

How did I miss this???

Amplifyd from www.nytimes.com

Jon Stewart, who already had a reputation for lobbing word grenades at media personalities and outlets that displease him, this week delivered one of the most sustained criticisms of Fox News ever heard on Fox News.

This week, invited onto “The O’Reilly Factor” by its host, Mr. O’Reilly, Mr. Stewart asserted that Fox News was “the most passionate and sells the clearest narrative of any news organization,” then asked with a smirk, “are you still referring to it in that manner?”

Dr. Aaron @aperlut on moving Super Bowl to Sat…Hell yes.

As I do each year at this time, with the Super Bowl set for next Sunday in Miami, I renew my efforts to move the Super Bowl to Saturday. The Super Bowl has arguably evolved into the pinnacle moment on America’s sports calendar. It has become a sports hRead more at www.joesportsfan.com

Publicreladvertisocialnetworks. (via @aperlut)

Dave Grossman says:

Loved this bit from an neat article on the blurring lines between PR and Advertising and the impact consumers (social networks) are making on the industry. H/t @aperlut for amplifying the url…

Amplifyd from www.goelastic.com

It’s no longer about who has the biggest…media budget.  Now, advertising is starting to look more like public relations, public relations is starting to look more like social networking and social networks are starting to be an extension of a consumer’s identity, down to what kind of Starbucks’ coffee they drink every morning. The power is in the hands of the consumer.

I just saw that Smith Wollensky will now allow Wall Streeters to swap stock shares for steak. Cute marketing concept, but it rubs me the wrong way.

This is an awesome idea. Steven Strogatz is a highly decorated professor of applied mathematics at Cornell University who will be authoring a column on math in an understandable way, just for adults. ‘Sexy’ 6-Foot Sculpture Is Made of Typewriter Parts

Dave Grossman says:

Very cool to see vintage typewriters turned into sculpture…can’t imagine this guy working 1400 hours to make this piece of art. Now that’s passion…

Amplifyd from www.wired.com

Jeremy Mayer spent more than 1,400 hours at the typewriter in the past year, but he wasn’t banging out a sci-fi novel. Instead, he was building Nude IV, aka Delilah — a 6-foot-tall sculpture made entirely of typewriter parts.

Mayer uses vintage typewriters in his intriguing artwork, carefully taking them apart and then recombining the mechanical pieces into anthropomorphic sculptures. Parts from about 50 typewriters went into making Delilah, said Mayer, who took inspiration from a friend’s artwork as well as the Bible when choosing a name for his latest creation.

What the heck has happened to the game of golf? Phil Mickelson is now using 20 yr. old clubs to get around a new PGA ruling banning sq. groove wedges! Turns out these particular square grooved clubs he chose to use this weekend were exempt via a strange loophole that the PGA missed. He is within the rules but jeez, isn't this supposed to be a gentleman's game, the only game where players regularly penalize themselves for errors no one even sees? You blew your chance to be the anti-Tiger Phil.
